help a fellow fan...

I know this woman named Melissa, not very well, but well enough to like her and be amazed by her. She's been active in many fandoms, and done her part to raise money for charities with her fannish activities. She's married, with a six-year-old son. She's a really cool and awesome person; I think you'd like her, too.

...She's been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. In six months, she's gone from hale and hearty to needing help walking and dressing. The average life expectancy for someone with Lou Gehrig's disease is 3-5 years.

Did I mention she's got a six-year-old son?

http://projectfiver.com/

It will take maybe sixty seconds of your time to sign the petition, and it will cost you nothing.

Melissa's good people. Go help.

And spread the word, as far and as wide as you can.

rp's

For posterity's sake, I've put up a list of past and present RPs at http://ms-semicolon.7-d.org/rp/ - just in case anyone's interested. This includes links to the current RP we've got going.

I'm hoping that we'll be able to do future RPs on Scribblit.com, as I grow weary of LJ's antics.

Anyway, I'm off to bed.

New H/D journal-based roleplay beginning...

Despite the fact that our current roleplay is still in progress, my imagination was recently rudely interrupted by yet another version of Draco, who's insisted on making his presence known. So in a heretofore-unprecedented move, we're going to try to do two different storylines at once: our current characters, at a_draconis and harry_bokeh, and these new boys as well. We'll see how well it works.

And who are these new characters, you might wonder? Well...

He left England after the War, to start a new life. He's crisscrossed the U.S., living in a half-dozen cities and visiting a double-dozen more, settling finally in a cozy neighborhood in northern Seattle. He's had girlfriends and boyfriends along the way, including one relationship whose memory haunts him still. He's come to love the great outdoors; he'll take any excuse to throw the camping gear into his Jeep and take off for the deep woods with his German Shepherd-mix, Lady. In spring through fall, he plays softball in an amateur league, on a team called the Sabertooth Crotch Crickets. He's also a devotee of local indie rock, and enjoys the music of bands you've never heard of. He's acquired a nickname, over the years - people call him Dark. You can find his journal here:

http://actaeonsdog.livejournal.com/

After a less than amicable break-up with Ginny, Harry left England for the states and eventually ended up in San Francisco where he had his first fling since breaking up with Ginny and had a one-night-stand with a red-headed, blue-eyed man. After waking up feeling awkward, yet satisfied, Harry went to Golden Gate Park, sat on a blanket, and thought long and hard. He came to the conclusion that he no longer cared much for San Francisco and that he obviously liked men as well as women. Harry decided to move again and found himself in Seattle. He fell instantly in love with the city and felt at home right away. One day, in a fit of boredom, he walked into his local Starbucks and got a job working as a barista. He found himself enjoying the work and the basic knowledge of coffee he was getting, but had a growing disdain for the company. He quit and found a job at an independent chain where he learned about as much as there is to know about coffee. Eventually, the owner of the company sold out to Starbucks, leaving Harry jobless and bored again. One day during a walk Harry passed a newly renovated building with a "For Lease" sign on the front. He called the number and within a few months, he opened "Harry's Rainy Day Coffee & Cafe." He's had a couple of girlfriends and more than a couple boyfriends, but after a rather strained relationship that ended in a bad break-up, Harry has been single ever since, focusing on making his cafe the best damn place for coffee and sandwiches in all of Seattle. His journal can be found here:

http://rainy-day-cafe.livejournal.com/

Come and have a look at our new boys, read the journals - the Draco journal in particular already has several longish entries that give a fair glimpse into his past and his personality - and friend them, if you wish to participate by commenting or simply follow along!

Need BIG favor. 10 seconds of your time.

Will you all - everyone, everywhere - do me a small, small favor?

Go to this page:

http://7thstpub.com/ip.php

It will tell you where it thinks you're currently located, based on your IP address.

Then come back to this URL:

http://draco.scribblit.com/16593.html?mode=reply

and tell me whether it's right, wrong, or close, or whether it failed to find you altogether.

I'm testing some code, but all I can tell from testing it myself is that it's reasonably accurate for me. Only by getting input from other people will I know whether the database of IP locations is reliable enough for me to continue working with.

Thanks in advance for your help!

So now it's my responsibility to make sure I don't have anyone friended who's a minor? Fuck that. Livejournal can bite my shiny metal ass.

Do note that I'm mirroring all content at insanejournal. If my LJ goes bye-bye, you'll know where to find me.

as a memory of a dream (1/1)

His mother used to paint. Watercolors: and he would watch her at work, delicate daubs of pale color forming petals on a flower, the blush on an apple, a wash of blue across a windswept sky. Her paintings were never hung anywhere visible, but lined the walls of the airy room she'd used as a studio, stacked in corners, and it is only now, years later, that he's thought to revisit them at all. Over her protests - for when are the artistic dabblings of a proper pureblood wife considered anything but the mildest affectation, a way of passing time to be spoken of only lightly and then forgotten? But Draco remembers now, he remembers those days of childhood, of watching her form pictures from the small tubs and tubes of pigment; and in the uncertainty of a too-abrupt adulthood, he finds himself reaching for any trace of comfort that might be found in the memories of his youth.

He gazes around at the walls, hung heavy with canvases, as reverently as if the room were a sacred chapel; he flips through the stacks of canvases, perusing each one carefully, pausing to pull aside any which catch at his heart and tug at him there. A bird, portrayed in a flutter and flurry of quick, abstract strokes - lilies-of-the-valley, newly-risen from a patch of snowclad earth - a young girl-woman of uncertain provenance, perhaps Narcissa herself, mid-whirl on a dance floor, a graceful swirl of dress robes and loose blonde hair. And then, there, toward the back, unexpected treasure: a quick study of a lean-bodied man holding a blanket-swathed infant, gazing at the child in his arms with an expression that manages, even in its few swiftly-painted lines, to be inscrutable and awestruck at once.

Draco holds this portrait before himself and studies it, humbled by the display of skill in portraying so acutely this scene he'd never known or even imagined; and he wonders if he looked this way, when first he held his own infant son in his arms.

In the end, he takes them all along with him to the fine new home in Essex - the bird, the lilies-of-the-valley, the dancer, the portrayal of his father and himself, and others; more, in the end, than he can carry - spurning the ancestral portraits which would be more proper to display, the stern visages of Malfoys and Blacks which had glowered down upon Draco in his own youth. He is a Malfoy, and a Black, and an adult, and an heir; but in the end, Draco decides, he will gaze by choice upon his mother's artistry, and know for just awhile longer that remnant of his youth, so that his Scorpius may also grow up bathed in that delicate wash of color, of movement captured, swiftly and silently as a memory of a dream.

my thoughts on LJ's asshattery

My take on the current LJ situation:

I would desperately like to see fandom move to its own playground, where it's safe from persecution and the cowardly actions of corporate cocksuckers. However, I don't believe there is currently a journal system which possesses both the inclination to allow fandom its freedom and the infrastructure to support a mass exodus from fandom. Greatestjournal deletes "inactive" accounts and usericons. Insanejournal is ad-supported. Journalfen is 18+, invite-only (or paid) and apparently has server issues. Scribblit.com - I'm a beta tester there and so far I love the sense of community, but as to whether this will become the service fandom needs, only time will tell - and it's got a long way to go.

So for the time being, I'm staying put - until either a critical mass of my LJfriends move to another service or services, or until I get kickbanned from LJ myself. However, I will not pay Livejournal ONE SINGLE CENT for any service, nor will I use their "sponsored" adware service, and if they add advertisements to the Basic level, I will actually go to the trouble of getting ad-blocking software so that their ads are never loaded, thus depriving them of my pageviews. In no way will I add one more cent or fraction of a cent to Livejournal's revenue. They have absolutely no care or concern for the opinions of their paying customers - so I refuse to be a paying customer. That is all.

Of course, this is all subject to change, depending on what asshattery LJ performs next. Any company stupid enough to repeat the same actions that got them lambasted only a couple of months earlier and expect their userbase not to notice is bound to repeat their idiocy again...

I NEED a U.S. 16-20 year old!!!

...No, not that way. I'm working on an original thingie, and I need to know what the scene was like for a teenager in 2005: what bands and fashions were popular, where the punk/emo thing fit into that, general background knowledge. If you can lend a hand, comment with your email address (I've set it to Screen All) and I'll drop you a line. Thanks in advance.

And oh, yeah, happy birthday to me. :)

Ten Years Gone, 5/? - H/D rated R, AU

STORY NOTES AND WARNINGS: This is a lightly-R rated story of H/D, which I started writing back in 2005. May contain background SB/RL, R/Hr, Led Zeppelin references, and I reserve the right to use the Dreaded Nickname "Remy". Having been originally conceived after book four, this universe disregards books five and six utterly. Any similarities are either (to me) logical or purely coincidental. Unedited, un-beta'd, and quite possibly unfit for human consumption. Read at your own risk; all feedback welcome.

Give me the name of ONE Harry Potter character - any character at all - and ONE other word - any word at all - and I will write a short fic, ideally a 100-word drabble, to match. (WARNING: Drabbles are likely to be Deathly Hallows-compliant: spoilers ahoy.)

ETA: This challenge is now CLOSED - thanks for all who helped!
